The Steward School welcomes students from other countries. Our small classes and nurturing school community offer international students a supportive and stimulating environment in which to further their general education while expanding their skills in English. Immersion in the American culture enriches both the international student and Steward’s American students. The Coordinator of the International Students Program works closely with each student and family to develop an individualized schedule. Our international students are placed in mainstreamed classes in several of the content areas while also being enrolled in English as a Second Language classes. There are separate grading systems that accommodate the different levels of English acquisition that the students have when entering Steward’s program.
International students enter our program in several ways. Sometimes students attend Steward through the International Experiences Program or through American Field Service. Some students discover Steward through consultants in their native land. Others come from families who recently moved into the area, or from looking for schools via the Internet. Regardless of how they find Steward, the ISP can offer support in several ways:
- Provision of English as a Second Language classes
- Assistance and advice regarding I-20 forms and visas.
- Records maintenance through the SEVIS program
- Support to families in how to access local resources
Students needing academic support in other areas such as math, etc., can be supported through individual tutoring through the CAL program for an additional fee.
Admission
For admission to the Steward School and the International Students Program, Steward’s Admission office needs to have the following:
- Completed application
- Translated copy of school records and transcripts
- Translated copy of any aptitude or achievement testing
- Translated recommendation letters from current teacher(s)
- If currently studying English, a translated letter of recommendation from the teacher.
Once these records are received, Admissions and the Coordinator of the ISP will set up an interview (a telephone interview will occur for those students who live outside of Virginia) to complete a brief assessment. Once the assessment is completed, Steward’s Admissions Committee will meet to determine if Steward can offer admission to the student.
