Lower School General Art
Lower School students attend art class two times a week. Students apply basic elements and principles of design in their projects. Lower school students work with different media and learn to respond to works of art. The students' artwork is displayed in hallways and the Dining Commons.
Middle School
In Middle School, students continue to develop the skills acquired in the lower school. Students learn to critique their works and works of others. Art 6 or Art 7 is a one-semester Fine Arts requirement. Art 8 is a full-year elective.
Upper School
Art is offered as an elective in the Upper School. Students may take
Art I, Art II, Art III, Art IV, Art V, or AP Studio Art.
Art III, IV, V, and AP Studio Art are invitational portfolio classes, which require assigned work during the summer. This class is for the student who is not only talented and interested in art but has a keen sense of time management and self-direction.
Digital Photography: In the Upper School, Photography I, II, and III provide the student with an opportunity to digitize, manipulate, and scan photographs using digital cameras, computer workstations, and flat bed scanners. Digital technology allows the student to see results immediately. Topics include image composition, dynamic range, and digital imaging techniques. In addition, students will develop their skills in Adobe Photoshop and similar software programs while gaining an understanding of the digital photography industry.
Graphic Design: Graphic Design introduces the student to photography and computer graphics as a study in design. The student gains an understanding of visual literacy and an appreciation of photography as an expressive Fine Arts medium. Students learn the basics of creating original art of personal expression using the computer as a tool. Art skills obtained in Art 1 are further developed through creative thinking, visual problem solving, and experimentation using various hardware and software applications. Students also use digital cameras and scanners to create art. The internet is introduced as an art resource. The history of the computer, art aesthetics and criticism are investigated. Ethical issues concerning computer-generated imagery are introduced. Artwork generated in this class serves as a basis for beginning computer graphics portfolio. No prior computer knowledge required.
Photography
Photography I enables the student to become proficient in the production of negatives and prints in a traditional black and white darkroom. Hands on projects will be proceeded by mastery of technical skills as demonstrated by objective quizzes and tests. Students will study the effective use of the camera as a tool for artistic expression, based on a strong foundation in the understanding of design principles and the history of photography as a fine art.
Photography II provides the student already proficient with the fundamentals of camera operation and darkroom practices the opportunity to continue the study of photography at a higher level. Darkroom work will be based on a more intensive study of the zone system as articulated by Ansel Adams. Regarding production, the student will work on a more independent basis towards the completion of projects according to a direction of their choosing. Focused study will include portraiture, photojournalism, commercial still life, fine art landscape, and documentary photography. In following a chosen direction, the student will be required to produce a portfolio of work presented according to professional standards.
