Steward Students put the final touches on "The Old Woman in the Shoe" mural.

Steward Students Create Mural

Earlier this school year, Saxon Shoes approached
The Steward School Visual Arts department about painting a mural in the store, which is located within Short Pump Town Center. Gary Weiner, President of Saxon Shoes and parent of Steward Alumnus, Evan Weiner '01, knew that Steward's commitment to community and emphasis on the arts would be the perfect match for creating a fun and whimsical piece
of art.

"Our staff receives positive comments every day from patrons walking the steps," explains Weiner, "And when they find out it was painted predominately by Steward students, they are even more interested."

The colorful mural will be on permanent display in Saxon. "Thanks to you and The Steward School for being part of the Saxon story," says Weiner. "Everyone involved should be very proud of their accomplishment!"

The mural is entitled "The Old Woman in the Shoe." Students in grades 6 through 12 helped Art Department faculty members Cindy Grissom,
Rugene Paulette, and Lynn Zinder complete the artwork.

The formal unveiling and reception was held at the store on Monday, April 21, 2008. At the reception Mr. Weiner presented students with a check for 10% of the week's total sales; Steward will donate these proceeds to ART 180--the students' non-profit organization of choice.

ART 180 creates and provides art-related programs to young people living in challenging circumstances, encouraging personal and community change through self-expression.
