General, Choral and Instrumental Music

The music program at The Steward School allows students to explore interests in General, Choral and Instrumental Music. Beginning in Kindergarten, children learn to express themselves through music.

Lower School General Music
The goal of the Lower School General Music program is to provide the students with a vehicle for emotional expression and a unique intellectual discipline. Students will gain an intellectual understanding of music through developmental experiences in singing, moving, listening, and performing on various rhythmic and melodic instruments.

Students have the opportunity to perform in a minimum of three "main stage" productions during each school year. Performance builds self-esteem and self-confidence, which carries over into other disciplines.

There is evidence that music can have a marked effect on conceptual development and abstract interpretation in other subject areas such as reading, mathematics, and expressive activities such as creative writing.

The Lower School General Music Program aims to assist students in discovering their own personal talents and nurturing that talent through opportunities provided both in and outside of the classroom musical experience. Each year is devoted to listening units developed around various musical composers.

Through musical involvement in the Lower School General Music Program, the students will build a foundation for a lifetime of musical enjoyment and participation.

The Choral Music Program
Intermediate Chorus 8, Upper School Mixed Chorus, Select Ensemble
The Steward School Choral Program is devised to lay a foundation for an understanding of the mechanics of reading and performing a choral score. Building on skills introduced in the Lower School General Music Program, the formal choral experience begins in eighth grade. On the intermediate level, students review the skills introduced in the theory program in 6th/7th grade theory class. The choral program emphasizes the fundamentals of vocal development, reading traditional notation, developing competency in both ensemble and individual performance.

The Intermediate Choral members have the opportunity to audition "in-house" for the District I Workshop Chorus. This is an opportunity to join with exceptional students from all over the area for a weekend of superior direction under top quality directors from all over the United States.

Upper School Choral Music
Upper School Mixed Chorus/ Select Ensemble
The Upper School Choral Program is devised to involve the student in a course of study concentrating on the acquisition of higher-level skills needed to acquire proficiency in ensemble vocal performance. The students will expand on the repertoire of skills for performance and creativity. The vocal literature will advance in difficulty as the students move up to the Upper School Choral Program. The students will also be encouraged to take leadership responsibility in the classroom and build on evaluative skills in group and individual settings.

The Upper School Mixed Chorus and the Select Chorus are required to participate in the audition process for District I Chorus. Each year, these students master the required music and audition individually for the limited positions in both the Women's Choir (SSAA) and the SATB Choir.

The Instrumental Music Program
The Steward School instrumental music class offers students an opportunity to discover their talents and a means for purposeful recreation that can be of life-long value. Instruction is offered in a variety of band and string instruments. Middle School Instrumental Music is an extra-curricular activity, meeting twice a week. In the Upper School, Instrumental Music is an elective. Students may choose to participate in an assortment of ensembles including Concert Band, String Orchestra, and Jazz Band.
