Fall Play Presents Compelling Coming-of-Age Story

Come see the first mainstage production of the year, “Look Homeward, Angel,” October 19-21 in the Lora M. Robins Theatre.

By: Jess Jordan ’18

Do you think your family is dysfunctional? Yours probably pales in comparison to the Gant family. Witness the drama and join Steward’s Performing Arts Department from Thursday, October 19 through Saturday, October 21 at 7 p.m. to enjoy the stage production of Thomas Wolfe’s classic autobiographical novel Look Homeward, Angel.

The southern drama tells the story of a flawed family living at the turn of the twentieth century. Directed by Upper School theatre teacher Craig Smith, this play appeals to older audiences and examines the theme of family interactions, Mr. Smith said.

The show features seniors Byron Minson and Lewis Tiller as the parents of Ben Gant (senior Ethan Williams), Luke Gant (senior Alex Merhige), Helen Gant (freshman Mara Beck), and Eugene Gant (senior Matthew Frayser), whose character is based off of Thomas Wolfe himself. The family deals with internal issues and struggles with each other and in their personal lives as the audience witnesses Eugene's coming-of-age story.

“I’m excited to play an entirely new role in this show,” Byron said. “As opposed to the traditional mother character, Eliza Gant is portrayed as a crazy and controlling woman.”

“I'm playing Laura James, a girl from Richmond that stays at the boarding house and is Eugene’s love interest,” said senior Nikki Leopold, who will be participating in her fourteenth Steward production.

Byron, Nikki, and the rest of the cast are so excited to share all their hard work. Admission is free, so please join us in supporting our actors as their work pays off in this wonderful production! Click here to RSVP to the event on Facebook.
