Center for the Advancement of Learning

A resource to facilitate your education.

The Steward School is composed of students with diverse aptitudes, talents, and learning styles. The Center for the Advancement of Learning (CAL) is committed to providing resources that allow students to explore their strengths and challenges and to utilize that knowledge to become lifelong learners. CAL helps personalize Steward's educational program to students' needs, interests, and learning styles through enrichment and support services. The department conducts student assessments, provides an in-school tutoring program, and serves as a resource for faculty and parents.

CAL provides a variety of programs:

  • Enrichment
  • Support for those in need of academic strengthening
  • A Parent Resource Center
  • Information regarding community resources

With an open-door policy, our CAL liaisons encourage students to utilize our full-range of educational resources. Some of these resources include help with study, organization, and time management skills as well as subject-specific tutoring.

CAL's Programs and Services

Resources: The Center for the Advancement of Learning is committed to providing resources for both students and parents. Some of these resources include study tips, organization or academic help, homework management, and strategies for reading, test preparation, note-taking tips, and more. A full list of resources can be found by clicking here.

Lower School Enrichment Program: The Lower School enrichment coordinator collaborates with classroom teachers to create additional programs and activities for all Lower School students. Often the activities integrate design and system's thinking, or engineering activities into core concepts within the curriculum. The enrichment coordinator also acts as the Lower School liaison with the Bryan Innovation Lab and Visiting Innovator programs.

Parent Resource Center Lending Library: The Parent Resource Center (PRC) Lending Library has a collection of almost 600 video, audio, and print materials covering a variety of subjects related to parenting and educating today's youth. This library is open to the Steward community.

Tutoring Program: Students who need additional support can receive one-on-one tutoring during the school day to remediate deficits in the core areas of reading, writing, math, or foreign language or to strengthen concepts taught in the classroom. Having Steward’s tutors on campus allows for additional ease of communication between the tutors and the teachers. In the Middle and Upper School, tutors have access to lesson plans that assist in guiding the sessions. The cost of tutoring is separate from tuition; however, the Robins Tutoring Scholarship Fund is an endowed scholarship fund used to cover the costs of tutoring for students needing financial assistance. This fund allows students who need tutoring to receive help, regardless of financial limitations.
