Winter Play Presents New Twist on Classic Shakespeare

Come see Steward's winter play, As You Like It, February 1-3 in the Lora M. Robins Theatre.

By: Jess Jordan ’18

Join Steward’s Performing Arts Department from Thursday, February 1 through Saturday, February 3 at 7 p.m. to enjoy the stage production of Shakespeare’s classic play As You Like It.

Directed by Performing Ars Department Chair and Upper School theatre teacher Craig Smith, the show takes a modern spin on a romantic comedy with a complex plot. Banishment, power struggles, and escapes into the forest come together in Shakespeare’s classic style of portraying a message in the midst of comedy.

In directing this play, Mr. Smith said, he asked himself the question, “What is love?” “The answer that rings most true for me is that when we love someone, we want to spend time with them, talk and joke with them, and just generally enjoy their company,” he writes in his Director’s Notes in the play’s program. “That is the approach I took when thinking about this production.”

He continues: “Another issue we had to face when tackling this project is that, although Shakespeare’s work is considered timeless and the themes he explores often apply to life today, our world is very different than London in 1603 when the play was first performed, especially when we look at women’s role in society … I decided to turn the play on its head and erase gender from the script altogether. It is indeed a risky experiment, but one that I think was well worth our while as we rehearsed our production and adapted as we moved along.”

The show will feature Middle and Upper School students, including senior Nikki Leopold, who will play Orland in her fifteenth Steward performance. Other seniors include Ryan Odibo as Audris, Byron Minson as Cealy, and Alex Merhige as Touchstone. Juniors Aayush Lalwaney and Evelyn Dumeer and sophomore Crary Moore will also play key roles as Regent Senior, Rossalay, and Regent Fedry, respectively.

The cast is excited to share the production that has required hours of hard work over the past weeks. In addition to the three shows, join us on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. for Dinner and a Show! For $8 per person, pizza, dessert, and drinks will be provided in the Middle School Dining Commons, and the Middle School chorus will perform. Register online by Wednesday, January 31 at 5 p.m. to reserve your meal.

Congratulations to our performers who have worked so hard to put on a great production!
