New Girls Varsity Lacrosse Coach Has Eye on Championship

Yorktown native Bonnie Corrigan brings more than a decade of playing, coaching experience to Steward.

Bonnie Corrigan has been selected as the new Steward varsity girls lacrosse coach. Coach Corrigan is an experienced lacrosse player and coach. Over the course of her collegiate career, she played for two Division I programs: Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. and VCU.

A Yorktown native, Coach Corrigan fell in love with lacrosse when she first started playing in eighth grade. She continued to play in high school for both her high school program and with Sue Murphy’s Premier Pumas travel team (now known as Storm Lacrosse). Corrigan has coaching experience with both girls and boys travel teams through Storm and NMS Venom.

Coach Corrigan said she is looking forward to bridging the individual talents and abilities of her players to create a strong, unified team. “I especially appreciate and respect the senior leadership already in place and will mentor them throughout the season,” she said. “These girls will be essential in setting the examples of the kind of hard work ethic and positive attitudes needed to be successful.”

As far as her goals for the team, Coach Corrigan is aiming for the state championship. “When we first met as a team, we discussed our goal of making it to the playoffs and advancing to the championship,” she said. “But regardless of the outcome, I want the girls to look back on the season and be able to say they learned more about lacrosse and grew as athletes and young women, all while creating long-lasting memories and friendships.”

Assistant Director of Athletics and former girls varsity lacrosse coach Christen Heidler said: “I am thrilled Bonnie is a part of our department and will be developing and empowering our female athletes. Not only does she have an incredible lacrosse IQ, but she seems to have a perfect balance between competitiveness and compassion. Bonnie can’t wait to get to know and work with the team. Concurrently, [Director of Athletics] Bruce [Secrest] and I can’t wait to see how she advances the girls lacrosse program.”

Steward Voices

Steward helped me develop the skills I needed to succeed in college and the courage and confidence to set competitive career goals for myself. But, these skills weren’t lessons I learned just in Steward’s classrooms; they came from the athletic fields, in the hallways, and during Honor Council meetings, too.
