Dear Middle School parents,

I hope you and your family are doing well. As we are completing our first week of continuous learning, I have loved seeing the smiling faces of the Middle School students during virtual classes and advisory time, and everyone agrees that we really miss being at school! I am very proud of the resilience and enthusiasm that the Middle School students and faculty have shown as we get acclimated to our “new normal” method of school. I also want to sincerely thank you parents for your help and patience during this challenging situation for everyone.

As the continuous learning platform has caused a large number of changes, I want to make sure you are aware of the most pressing ones.

  • Middle School parent feedback on week one. As we complete our first week, the faculty and staff are reflecting on what went well, and not so well, in order to improve the learning experience for our students and families. We would also like your input. Please take a moment to fill out this brief survey to help us know how the first week went in your house and to give us valuable feedback as we move forward: Middle School Family Survey. (Please fill out one survey per Middle School student in your household.) I will also be seeking feedback from the students and faculty.

  • Community Time - Monday, March 30. As the Middle School students and faculty typically join together as a community for announcements on Monday mornings at 10:05 a.m., we will do so virtually on Monday, March 30. I will be sending the students an email with the link to our Zoom meeting, and I look forward to seeing the whole Middle School community together again.

  • Parent/advisor conferences - Friday, April 3. During this challenging time, the Middle School faculty and I are especially focused on the health and well-being of your children. Therefore, we have decided to alter our plans for spring conferences. Parents, and children if you would like, will have the opportunity to meet with your child’s advisor on Friday, April 3 to discuss any concerns you have. Your child’s advisor will be reaching out to you next week to set up a time to meet virtually on April 3. If your child’s teachers have academic concerns, they will be reaching out to you by email. As always, if you have an academic question or concern about your student, feel free to reach out to the teacher by email.
  • Locker contents. Once Virginia’s state of emergency has been lifted, I will be notifying you and your children about times and dates to pick up remaining items that have been left in Middle School or P.E. lockers.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

All the best,

Susan Atkinson
