Kam Smith signs with Northern Illinois

Senior shortstop will play baseball at Northern Illinois University

On November 16, senior Kamron Smith signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Northern Illinois University with an athletic scholarship. Surrounded by a large group of family, friends, Steward supporters, and teammates, the shortstop committed to playing for the Huskies when he begins college in fall 2016.

Kam will play for the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Division I program under the direction of Head Coach Mike Kunigonis, who said Kam’s strong hitting skills and ability to play multiple positions will be an asset to the team. He is the third Steward athlete to play Division I athletics in the last two years, including two baseball players.

“This has always been his dream ever since he was young,” said Jean Smith-Turner, Kam’s mother. “He always said he was going to be the next Derek Jeter. This is a stepping stone for him to get to the next level. I’m extremely proud of him and excited for where he’s going.”

Kam, who came to Steward last year, also plays varsity basketball. He said the best aspect of his experience here has been forming lasting relationships with his friends and mentors. “I really want to thank the Steward community and all the coaches for giving me this opportunity and supporting me no matter what,” he said.

Director of Athletics Bruce Secrest directed the ceremony and photo opportunities, citing Kam’s impeccable character as well as his athletic skill. Kam made sure to take a photo with sixth-grader Owen Marcey—the pair became friends when Owen participated in a Steward baseball camp that Kam helped with, and they’ve kept in touch ever since.

“This is an example of what happens when you give to the community—the community gives back,” Mr. Secrest said. “You can tell how much people love and care for Kam. Who you are as a person—that’s with you for the rest of your life. We are so happy for Kam.”
