New varsity lacrosse coach aims for success through camaraderie

Baltimore native Jim Tyler will bring long-term lacrosse experience to the program.

Jim Tyler has been selected as the new boys varsity lacrosse coach. Mr. Tyler is an experienced player and coach who has coached students for the last five years as director of the Southside for Geronimo Lacrosse.

Director of Athletics Bruce Secrest said: “We are excited to have Jim Tyler, who is not only an incredible coach but an incredible man. He will not only benefit our young people on the field, but he will also help them in becoming the type of young men we want to produce at Steward. Jim is someone who understands the whole picture, and it’s a blessing to have him here.”

Originally from Baltimore, Mr. Tyler said he first fell in love with the sport in his hometown. He went on to play lacrosse at the collegiate level at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. He has continued to play on local club teams in Richmond and currently plays on a national travel club team out of Baltimore.

His main goal in his new position is to develop students who may have never played before into successful lacrosse players who can work together as a team while having fun.

“My expectations are very open,” Mr. Tyler says. “I define success as completing a good play, whether it’s on offense or defense. Lacrosse is a team sport, and a team that plays well together can be very successful. I believe if I teach the basics of teamwork, we will be a difficult group to defeat.”

Mr. Tyler has two grandsons at Steward, Dylan Ghosh ’22 and Cole Ghosh ’23, who are new to Steward this year. “I have found that Steward has a very inclusive atmosphere,” Mr. Tyler says. “I wanted to steadily become more active in my grandsons’ lives, and I had always wanted to be a high school coach, so I’m extremely excited to have this opportunity.”

Mr. Tyler will be on campus regularly beginning February 16, the first day of varsity practices, and he is eager to meet parents of both current and prospective lacrosse players.

Steward Voices

Steward is an atmosphere that fosters confidence—something we have seen in all three of our kids. Whether it is playing a new sport, running for a seat on the Honor Council, or singing a solo on Talent Night, they have been encouraged to try, to experience, and to grow.

Steward Voices

Steward helped me develop the skills I needed to succeed in college and the courage and confidence to set competitive career goals for myself. But, these skills weren’t lessons I learned just in Steward’s classrooms; they came from the athletic fields, in the hallways, and during Honor Council meetings, too.
