Reflections on Minimester 2018

Lyndda Cevallos '20 and Anita Almenar Murillo '19 share their experiences completing internships for the 2018 Minimester at Steward.

During minimester, I had the opportunity to work for Sra. Rushmore, which is considered the best advertising company in Spain and is in charge of important brands such as the Coca-Cola Company.

My first impression was really good but it was very different from what I expected. I expected a lot of desks together and closed rooms, but instead there were a lot of open spaces and the walls were made out of glass so it gave the impression of a huge room.

When I got there, I met a lot of people who showed me all of the different departments and explained how marketing works and the process for creating an advertisement. After a couple of hours my impression didn’t change; I still loved it as I got to participate in a brainstorming meeting for an ad.

The things that surprised me the most were that everybody works together most of the time and also how many things they have to do before releasing the ad. Everyone was really nice to me and they all had something to teach me. My first day was great!

Each day, I worked in a different department. On the second day, I worked with Art and Creativity and learned all of the different steps needed before creating an ad. First is the briefing in which the client tells us all of the details of the brand he or she wants to sell. Then we research more about the brand and about the people it’s going to be sold to, then there’s brainstorming, and after that, the model of the ad is shown to the client. If it’s approved, the Art and Creativity and Production departments create it.

During my internship, I got to work with a famous Instagrammer. I helped her with her marketing and future projects such as doing a photoshoot in New York, creating collaborations with other famous people, and publishing pictures on her Instagram with Gucci, Nike, and Adidas shoes. She was really nice! She also works at Sra. Rushmore, so she showed me a banner ad she was making and I helped give her ideas.

On the third day, I saw an ad being cast. I learned about all of the specific criteria, which make it really hard to find the right people. I also saw the detailed specifications the producers gave for making the ad. For example: the type of people who would be in the ad, the angle of the camera and how it would move, the landscape, what it would be about, etc.

The last day I worked in the Social Media department. I participated in some giveaways: picking the winners, emailing them, and talking to them about the award. The Sra. Rushmore staff also showed me some internet marketing techniques and I answered some questions the clients had online.

I learned a lot during my internship and I’m looking forward to going back. What stands out in my mind the most is seeing all of the different steps needed for an advertising campaign, as I would have never imagined how much work is needed for every campaign.

I think I did very well as I helped as much as I could, learned a lot, and participated a lot. There’s a lot of pressure in this job because there’s such a limited time for every campaign. That can make it can very stressful, but it is also a really fun job because every day is different. To work there, all you really need is a good imagination and patience. Most of the people here have studied marketing but as everyone says, you learn almost everything you need through practicing.

I wasn’t expecting my internship to be very interesting but the truth is that I loved it and it made me realize that this is what I want to do after college. I definitely found my ideal career path.

During minimester week, I interned at Kelleher Orthodontics in Chesterfield. I chose to do my internship at an orthodontics office because they work with the treatment of irregularities in the teeth, including the use of braces, which I find very interesting. I got the opportunity to watch an assistant make a retainer, which startled me in many ways, one being the amount of time that it takes to make them.

On my first day at Kelleher Orthodontics, the staff greeted me and made me feel very welcome. Since Dr. Kelleher spends half the time in his office talking about treatment plans to his patients and the other half working on patients, I spent a lot of time with the orthodontics assistants. I therefore became very familiar with their routine procedures as well as the procedures Dr. Kelleher does on a daily basis. I observed Dr. Kelleher when he was working on patients as well as assisted him by setting up a tray of tools before each patient arrived.

This internship has confirmed my interest in pursuing a career in the medical/dental field. Whether I specialize in orthodontics or a different specialty, I want to pursue a career that impacts people in a positive way. Helping others as well as learning about the human body has always been a passion of mine.

This internship has introduced me to a career that combines both of my passions. Something I really like about orthodontics is that an orthodontist sees similar stress-free situations every day, leading to an overall calm lifestyle. I have realized that you can learn a lot by being curious, asking questions, and having a good attitude. Observing Dr. Kelleher and the the assistants as much as possible gave me a better insight on the life of an orthodontist. An opportunity like this does not come very often therefore one should take advantage to learn as much from it as possible.
