New field hockey coach strives to enhance program

Richmond native Samantha Collins will coach during Steward’s first year in new conference.

Samantha Collins has been selected as the new varsity girls field hockey coach. Coach Collins is an experienced player who started coaching in 2009 with a JV team at Midlothian High School. She competed regionally and nationally for five years as a coach for travel league Allied Fusion and coaches U-12 to U-19 teams with the Richmond Strikers Field Hockey program.

Director of Athletics Bruce Secrest said: “We are excited to have Samantha because she has a tremendous background and brings a wealth of knowledge about the game of field hockey to Steward. We look forward to watching her help move our girls to the next level.”

This is the first year that Steward will take part in the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools (TCIS) after leaving the League of Independent Schools (LIS). Coach Collins said she views this as a great opportunity to make a big impact on the program in her first year.

“[The change] is coming at a good time as I begin my first year because we’ve been given a clean slate—no one knows who we are,” she said. “We can build on something we’re all brand new to, so I think it’ll be a perfect starting point for all of us.”

A native of Midlothian, Coach Collins became interested in playing field hockey while watching her sister’s high school team practice when she was eight years old. She began playing in eighth grade and continued all through high school. She competed at the collegiate level for a year as a forward at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg before experiencing a career-ending injury. She later transferred to VCU, where she majored in psychology. Coach Collins is currently pursuing a second degree in exercise science.

“I’m excited to approach the team with a sports psychology perspective as I combine what I’ve learned in school as well as my coaching experience,” she said. “I’m looking forward to being a new face in a new environment as I work to build a base and redefine the program.”

Coach Collins will be on campus regularly after beginning varsity practices on Monday, August 15, and she said she is eager to meet parents of both current and prospective field hockey players.

Steward Voices

Steward helped me develop the skills I needed to succeed in college and the courage and confidence to set competitive career goals for myself. But, these skills weren’t lessons I learned just in Steward’s classrooms; they came from the athletic fields, in the hallways, and during Honor Council meetings, too.
