Nic Enright Named Gatorade Virginia Baseball Player of the Year

Senior Nic Enright achieved a major milestone, as he was named the Gatorade Virginia Baseball Player of the Year.

Senior Nic Enright achieved a major milestone today, as he was named the Gatorade Virginia Baseball Player of the Year. Nic is the first Steward School athlete to achieve this honor, and he joins other baseball greats such as Derek Jeter and Chipper Jones, who were named their respective states’ Gatorade Players of the Year. Nic has committed to playing baseball for the Virginia Tech Hokies in the fall, however, it is widely anticipated that he could be drafted by a Major League Baseball team in June.

This is the 30th year of Player of the Year awards for the nation’s best high school athletes; the awards are sponsored by The Gatorade Company in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports. According to Gatorade, “The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Enright as Virginia’s best high school baseball player.” The national Players of the Year will be announced in June. To publicly recognize the honor, Steward will receive a banner and a trophy, both of which will be presented to Nic at a later date.

Nic’s impressive statistics

  • He is a right-handed pitcher with a 6-1 record, a 0.79 ERA, and 50 strikeouts against just nine walks in 44.1 innings pitched this past season.
  • He led the Spartans (15-8) to the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division 2 state semifinals in May.
  • A four-time VISAA Division 2 First Team All-State selection, Nic batted .246 with five extra-base hits, 14 runs scored and 19 RBI.
  • A Perfect Game USA Preseason Third Team All-American, he led the team to the state title as a junior, in addition to carrying the EvoShield Canes to the 2014 World Wood Bat Association championship this past summer, capturing all-tournament honors.
  • As he prepares to graduate from Steward on June 1, Nic has maintained a 4.04 weighted GPA and has served as a student ambassador, a member of the student-athlete committee, and a volunteer youth baseball instructor.

“Needless to say, he is a very talented and skilled baseball player,” said Steward head coach Bruce Secrest. “He is able to do things and has abilities that are a gift. He is such a smooth and clean pitcher—it looks effortless as he performs. However, this is not to say that he does not work at his trade. The truth is it’s just the opposite; he is the hardest working player I have ever been around in 32 years.”
