February 2020 Athletic Highlights

Our varsity Spartans added two team state championships and two individual state championships to Steward's collection.
The boys and girls varsity swim/dive teams finished second at the VISAA DII Invitational on Saturday, February 1. Spartan seniors Allison Langenburg '20 and Noah Nichols '20 both set new meet records, Allison in the girls 200-yard freestyle (1:52.90) and Noah in the boys 100-yard breaststroke (56.34). A week later, Noah and Allison again clinched victories at the TCIS championship meet. Noah won both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle, and Allison took home the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Erin Langenburg '22 finished second in two races: the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle. Overall, the boys finished #3 and the girls finished #4.

Steward's varsity swim/dive teams also had an excellent showing at the VISAA state championship swim meet in Christiansburg on February 14-15. Together, our girls swim/dive team (Allison Langenburg '20Erin Langenburg '22Allie Witdoeckt '24, Ashley Compton '24, and Scottie Gilg '20) took home the VISAA DII state title. Noah Nichols '20 was the top boys swimmer in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke, not just within VISAA DII but across all state divisions.

A year after finishing the season #1 in the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools (TCIS), the varsity girls basketball team took home the top spot in the VISAA DII state championship. The Spartans battled their path to victory over Nansemond-Suffolk Academy 54-45 to finish the season with a 23-8 record. Mimi Traynham '21 ended the night with 20 points, while Sherese Pittman '21 collected 23 points and 16 rebounds.
