Standout Spartan: Sherese Pittman '21

Last year, Sherese Pittman '21 had plenty of good news to celebrate. She scored her 1,000th career point early in the season and helped lead the varsity girls basketball team to the program's first state championship. Sherese was also named the VISAA DII Player of the Year and, later, she formally committed to play DI basketball at James Madison University. Now, she's celebrating a different career-defining achievement: making the 2021 McDonald’s All American Game nominee list.

Sherese is only one of 21 girl athletes to represent Virginia on the shortlist this year. The country's most prestigious high school basketball event, the McDonald’s All American Game is a single exhibition match representing 48 of the country's best high school players. The annual event typically includes a slam dunk contest and a three-point shootout in addition to the exhibition match. This year, the event will occur as a virtual celebration to best protect the health and safety of participants.

"This year’s nominees are being recognized for the consistent hustle, grind and passion each have brought to the game of basketball over the course of their high school careers," according to a press release announcing the list of nominees. The final roster of 48 players will be chosen shortly, and those participants will join a long list of elite high school standouts from history including Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Maya Moore, Candace Parker, and many more.
