Varsity Girls Basketball Wins State Championship Second Year in a Row

Victory noted in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Steward's varsity girls basketball team clinched their second straight VISAA DII state championship over the weekend, besting Highland School 45-38. Notably, they had not played a regulation game since January 20 before Thursday's victory in the semifinals and Saturday's championship win.

It was an invigorating cap to an unusual year in which the girls, lead by Athletics Assistant and head coach Kara Bacile, worked on developing their teamwork and fundamentals in lieu of consistent competitive play.

Coach Bacile was quoted in game's write-up in the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

“'It’s huge to be able to come out here, in a year where we weren’t even guaranteed that we were going to have any games at all,' Bacile said. 'To be put in the opportunity that we were still able to win a championship … is just the icing on the cake.'”

We are so proud of this group for persevering to the very end this year. The varsity girls basketball program has established itself as the team to beat in our division, and we look forward to defending our title next year!
