Margaret Maclin Receives 2019 Cramer Award

Seven faculty and staff members and coaches were honored at the 2019 Board, Faculty, and Staff Dinner.
Teachers, coaches, and staff members were honored at the annual Board, Faculty, and Staff Dinner on Wednesday, February 13. Margaret Maclin, who celebrates her thirtieth anniversary at Steward this year, received the twelfth annual Paul R. Cramer Award, given in memory of the former Steward headmaster to a faculty member who best embraces the characteristics of “balance, perspective, and humor.

Upon receiving the award, Mrs. Maclin said: “I am honored to be this year’s recipient of the Cramer Award. My years at Steward have been a time of professional and personal growth, and I can truly say that I have enjoyed every moment of the experience.”

Mrs. Maclin began her teaching career 51 years ago in Alabama, and brought her love of the English language and teaching to Steward in 1989. During the awards ceremony, Head of School Dan Frank shared musings from friends and family that describe Mrs. Maclin.

The first, from her daughter Morgan: “She’s so popular with the kids not because she’s butterflies and rainbows — she’s a straight shooter, and that’s hard to find. She’s not afraid to let them hear a discouraging word.”

Steward math teacher Corbin Orgain ‘96, a former student and current colleague and friend, explained: “She knows how to teach grit and resilience. She never gives an empty compliment, and if she tells you you’ve done well, you know you have done well. So, the kids work for it; they want it.”

Susan Atkinson, director of the Middle School, said: “Margaret is a skilled teacher who continues to hone her craft even after fifty years in the classroom. She loves working with her sixth-grade students and sets high expectations for them, which they work hard to meet or exceed. She is also a beloved advisor and the teacher that alums and Upper School students frequently stop by to see. Margaret is a legend.”

Previous Cramer Award honorees include Heather Jeter, Robin Ricketts, Catesby Jones, Bonnie Anderson, Carolyn Brandt, Bev Fox, Gardner Mundy, Rugene Paulette, Janet Rice, Louise Robertson, and Chris Tickle, each of whom received a grant to use toward professional development as part of the award.

After Mrs. Maclin’s award presentation, six additional awards were presented to faculty and staff members to recognize their outstanding contributions to Steward. Each recipient was given an engraved plaque and a check.

  • The Lower School award is named for Debbie Hanger, a trustee and beloved member of the community who served as director of Lower School for a decade. The 2019 Debbie Hanger Outstanding Lower School Teacher Award was presented to fifth-grade teacher Ron Coles.
  • The Middle School award is named for Roger Coulombe, former director of Middle School and head of school who was known for being compassionate, caring, and deeply committed to Steward’s mission and community. The 2019 Roger Coulombe Outstanding Middle School Teacher Award was presented to Chris Petrie, dean of student support.
  • The Upper School award is named for Carolyn Brandt, who spent 32 years at Steward and was—and continues to be—an integral part of Steward’s growth and a champion of the school’s mission. The 2019 Carolyn Brandt Outstanding Upper School Teacher Award was presented to history teacher Sarah Dwelle.

The Parents Association presented a staff recognition award named for former Director of the Physical Plant Bob Sanders, who spent two decades supervising the growth of Steward’s campus. The 2019 Robert Sanders, Jr. Outstanding Staff Member Award was presented to Lee Healey, division assistant in the Upper School.

The Spartan Club presented two awards to coaches who have made a significant impact on their teams and at Steward, inspiring our players to be competitive athletes as well as respectful, engaged citizens.
