December 2019 / January 2020 Athletic Highlights

Three basketball players join the 1,000 Career Points Club just weeks apart, and other notables from the winter athletic season.
With an uncanny display of skill (not to mention timing), three of Steward’s varsity basketball players—all of whom are juniors—joined the 1,000 career point club within weeks of one another. Sherese Pittman ’21Efton Reid ’21, and Mimi Traynham ’21 reached the coveted milestone with a season and a half of play left to add to those numbers. The trio of Spartans received nods in the press from Richmond Times-Dispatch and NBC-12.

Zach Rosenthal ’21 was named Most Valuable Player of the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament held from December 20-23, 2019. Rosenthal scored a jaw-dropping 12 points in 87 seconds during the championship match against Trinity, pulling Steward out of a 9-point hole in the third quarter and leading the Spartans to a 65-63 victory. You can read about Zach’s memorable performance in a fantastic write-up of the championship game by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Three Spartans were named to the All-Metro team in their respective sports. They are Grace Fass ’21 (2nd team, field hockey), Casie Steinfatt ’21 (2nd team, field hockey), and Hannah Lipinski ’21 (2nd team, volleyball). Way to represent our school, ladies!

Steward’s varsity dive teams competed with Spartan fierceness on January 8, with strong performances from both the boys and girls teams. Four of the top five varsity boys divers at the TES January Invitational were from The Steward School, listed here in order of their finish at the meet: Matthew McCullough ’21, Elliot French ’20, James Cox ’20, and Jack Pusser ’20. On the varsity girls team, Nancy Walker ’22 finished second, and Anne Aderhold ’23 finished fifth.

The JV dive teams also had an excellent night on January 8. For the Steward JV girls, two divers finished in the top 10: Molly Timmerman ’26 (#6) and Laney Vanderbeck ’26 (#8).
