Standout Spartan: Harrison Gelber '21

Senior joins Virginia's All-State Band for third consecutive year.
Since joining the Upper School band, Harrison Gelber '21 — three-time winner of Steward's Most Accomplished Upper School Instrumentalist award — has had no shortage of success as a percussionist.

Two years ago, he became the first Spartan concert band member to earn a spot in Virginia's All-State Band. He repeated that feat the following year, and, what comes as no surprise to us, we have learned that Harrison has extended his run for the third year in a row, earning second chair in the percussion section of the 2021 All-Virginia Symphonic Band!

During his virtual audition for this year's All-State Band, Harrison competed on snare drum and mallet percussion against 70 of the state's top percussionists across 16 districts. Of course, not everyone can vie for the coveted All-State honor. Auditioners must first earn one of the top chairs in their individual districts, meaning Harrison was up against the state's best percussionists.

In a typical year, the All-State concert is held at Richmond CenterStage (formerly known as the Carpenter Theatre Center for the Performing Arts). This year's event will be held virtually due to COVID-19 safety precautions, so we will be clapping in time with Harrison from afar. Congratulations on your tremendous run, Harrison!
