Standout Spartan: Ethan Dumeer '24

Ethan Dumeer ’24 is extra-busy these days. In addition to schoolwork and playing clarinet and trumpet for the Steward band, he is leading a group of volunteers to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Ethan’s participation is done in conjunction with the Student of the Year program — an annual leadership program through which high school students across the country compete to raise money and awareness for the work of the LLS.

This hardworking Spartan has a personal connection to the LLS’s mission to cure blood cancers.

“When my mom was almost two years old, her mother died of leukemia, at a time when there were not many treatments available,” said Ethan. “She was only 27 years old. The legacy of my grandmother has affected our family ever since, and I want to do whatever I can to help find a cure for blood cancer.” 

Ethan’s team includes his parents, his sister Evelyn Dumeer ’19, his advisor Betsy Orgain, and fellow sophomores Jackson Rhamy, Max Magrill, and Zeke Hudson.

The Student of the Year campaign runs from February 3 to March 25 and culminates in a dinner and silent auction. That’s when the candidate whose team has raised the most money will be announced as the Student of the Year. 

“My team has a stretch goal of raising $50,000, and we are reaching out to all of our contacts: friends, family members, and local businesses, to ask for their support,” said Ethan, who noted that there is a second Student of the Year team with Steward connections. That team is led by co-candidates Mollye Goldberg ’23 and Sadie Goldberg ’25. “Technically, we are ‘competing’ against each other, but really the goal is just to all raise as much as we can together for LLS,” said Ethan. He’s currently planning several dress-down days for Middle School and Upper School students to help raise money for LLS. Stay tuned for more details!
