Classroom Happenings: Exploring the Wonders of South America

Steward third-graders recently explored South American food, crafts, and art with hands-on activities in the Bryan Innovation Lab. They cooked up delicious Argentine empanadas, created traditional Chilean weavings, and made paintings inspired by Brazilian artist Romero Britto. Grade Three Teachers Ashley Lenhart, Kristen Minster, and Marsh Hayes created the unique lesson to help students gain a deeper understanding of South America. 

“Our students had been learning about South America in our classrooms, and it’s always exciting to see them have the opportunity to engage with the culture for themselves,” said Ms. Lenhart. 

Ms. Minster, who lived in Chile for four years, shared with students some Chilean treasures, including lapis lazuli (a deep-blue, semi-precious stone), books, figurines, and tapestries.

“These hands-on experiences gave our students a sense of South American culture and traditions,” said Ms. Minster. “It was fun to see them add their own unique style to their creations!"

Ms. Hayes noted that many of the third-graders continued and extended their weavings and paintings during their free time at school. “They also tried cooking their own empanadas at home,” she said. “I love that it wasn’t a ‘one and done’ lesson.”
