Whirled Peace Day

The Steward School
Pinwheels, birthdays, and bubbles
On September 21, The Steward School celebrated Whirled Peace Day — a cherished Spartan tradition. Students in Middle School and Upper School art classes, as well as all Lower School students, created pinwheels (symbols of peace) a few days prior to Whirled Peace Day. During Community Time on September 21, students gathered outside to “plant” the festive pinwheels on the Wilton Lawn.

Under sunny skies, Lower School Art Teacher Lynn Zinder, whose hard work has been instrumental in organizing Whirled Peace Day for many years, welcomed the community and encouraged Middle and Upper Schoolers to mingle with Lower Schoolers on the lawn. The Steward Choir, under the direction of Middle School/Upper School Choral Music Teacher Heidi Taylor, sang several songs, including the uplifting tune, “The World is Ours.”

Birthday Celebrations
Inside and outside the classroom, Spartans are encouraged to be empathic and thoughtful in their actions and make meaningful connections with each other and the broader community. These connections are an essential part of the School’s strategic plan and its mission to prepare students for life beyond Steward.

Each year for Whirled Peace Day, the School partners with local organizations. In the past, Steward has collaborated with Henrico Police and Fire, the James River Foundation, and The Anna Julia Cooper School.

This year — Steward’s 50th birthday! — Spartans collected items for “birthday boxes” (cake, icing, baking tins, balloons, soft drinks, candles, and party favors) to donate to two local organizations: Peter Paul, a community-based agency that serves East End families; and Church Hill Activities and Tutoring (CHAT), which serves the East End through education and after-school enrichment. Tiffany Goodman, Steward’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion coordinator, welcomed Sharon Burton, director of education at Peter Paul, and Jonathan Chan, executive director at CHAT, who thanked Spartans for their generosity.

Spartans celebrated the conclusion of Whirled Peace Day by blowing bubbles, tossing earth-decorated inflatable balls in the air, and smiling for photos.
