Dogs on Parade

Fourth and fifth graders taught by Lower/Middle School Visual Arts Teacher Abby Klein and Lower School Visual Arts Teacher Lynn Zinder recently created papier mâché dogs, and the adorable pups will be exhibited at Saxon Shoes (in Short Pump Town Center, 11800 W. Broad St.) on November 14-20.

The community is also invited to an opening reception at Saxon Shoes, which will take place on November 15 from 4-7 p.m. Come out and see some doggone cute pups!

In honor of Steward’s 50th anniversary year, 50 dogs were created. The personable pups were constructed with juice and liter bottles, wires, and newspaper covered with wheat paste. Students gave their puppy pals a personal touch, writing bios that included their dogs’ favorite activities and foods. 

The captivating canines were first spotted in September at SpartaFest, where families could vote for their favorite dog and give donations to FETCH a Cure, a non-profit that furthers pet cancer awareness, education, and treatment. Over $250 was collected! Saxon Shoes will generously donate 10 percent of all sales on November 15 to FETCH a Cure.

Spartans of all ages strive to create meaningful connections both in school and beyond. This is an essential part of Steward’s commitment to encouraging all members of the School community to share their gifts. 

“The Steward School makes a great effort to connect with outside organizations that help others,” said Ms. Zinder. “When planning this project, our Fine Arts Department looked for an agency that would best fit with our exhibit. FETCH a Cure was a perfect match.” She added, “Saxon Shoes is always willing to help out with a community event, and it’s extra special that Evan Weiner ’01, the son of Saxon owner Gary Weiner, is a Steward alumnus.”
