Rise Against Hunger

The Steward School
A community event helps those in need
On a recent Sunday afternoon, 92 volunteers gathered in the Steward Athletic Center for a meal-packing service event to benefit Rise Against Hunger, an international hunger relief organization. Rise Against Hunger meals are served around the globe in medical clinics, vocational training programs, elder care facilities, and schools.

Students, faculty and staff, parents, grandparents, and friends rolled up their sleeves and got to work scooping rice, dried beans, dehydrated vegetables, and vitamins into plastic bags, which were then packed into sturdy cardboard boxes. The meal packets will be sent to developing nations throughout the world. In all, Steward volunteers packed 19,440 meals for Rise Against Hunger.

Rashad Lowery, campus life and community stewardship coordinator, organized the event and led the enthusiastic group through a busy, fulfilling day. As they have for many years, Bobby and Kim Magnano (parents of Joe '25, Tommy '23, Michael '20, and Matea '17) sponsored the event.

“The Steward School has been involved in Rise Against Hunger for the last decade,” said Mr. Lowery, “ and the Magnano family has been pivotal in helping Steward partner with this organization. We are so grateful to them. I am blown away by how our community is inspired to work together to address and end hunger.”

Over the last 10 years, Steward volunteers have packed 158,000 meals for Rise Against Hunger — something that would not have been possible without the Magnano family’s unparalleled generosity. We are thankful to them, and to the volunteers who helped make this service event a success!
