Standout Spartan: Mila Hirsch '29

The Steward School
This musician has an exciting summer ahead.
Congratulations to Mila Hirsch '29, who has been accepted to the Summer Performing Arts With Juilliard program for piano. The intensive, two-week program, led by Juilliard faculty artists, includes private lessons, artistic collaboration, masterclasses, seminars, and performances. The program will be held at Nord Anglia Schools in Orlando, Florida in late June.

The application process was rigorous: Mila applied by performing "Clair de Lune" and "Rondo alla Turca" in one sitting and submitted a video of her performance. No editing was allowed, and hundreds of students from around the world applied.

“I was so excited when I found out I was accepted,” said Mila. “Dr. Parsley [Kadie Parsley, Middle School dean of student support] asked me to come into the hall and I thought I was in trouble … but my mom was there. She showed me the letter of acceptance. I went back to my English class and told everyone and we cheered!”

Mila, who also plays the harp, started playing piano during the pandemic. “My parents got my brother and me a piano and we took virtual lessons,” she said. “I realized that the music for piano and harp are very similar.” Mila says that the “connection between people” is what she most loves about music. “We used to take my harp to my great-grandmother’s assisted living facility, and I would play in the cafe area,” she recalled. “Everyone would come out of their rooms and listen and sing, especially when it was a Beatles song!”
