How can I join or support the Spartan Club?

The Spartan Club recruits members annually from all Steward constituencies—parents, faculty, alumni, and alumni parents. Yearly dues support all Spartan Club programs and initiatives, including athletic equipment, apparel, scholarships, visiting speakers, and facilities. Members not only support the athletic program through their dues, but they also support the school by volunteering their time and promoting pride and enthusiasm for the athletic program. If you would like more information on volunteering for the Spartan Club or becoming a member, click here. The Steward School is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization under Tax ID# 54-0914765. Your Spartan Club membership is tax-deductible as permitted by law.

Why does The Spartan Club raise funds?

The Steward School is dedicated to providing a high-quality athletic program for its students. With 37 teams in the Middle and Upper Schools, the Steward athletic program gives each student the opportunity to find the sport and team that is right for him or her.

The school’s operating budget provides coaches and athletic staff, team uniforms, and supplies for the program. The Spartan Club supplements these provisions with “extras” that enhance the athletic experience for participants and spectators alike. The Spartan Club raises the funds necessary to provide additional team equipment, audio-visual supplies, and other materials and services that will ensure the continued success of Steward athletics.

In the past, the Spartan Club has raised funds to build a sports pavilion, repair and upgrade fields, purchase team practice uniforms, supply coaches with warm-ups and team attire, purchase weight room equipment, and fund scholarships and awards for student-athletes.

Ray Tate Spartan Golf Classic

The Spartan Club hosts an annual golf invitational on the first Monday in October. The event has continued to grow and now attracts more than 100 golfers, including parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends within the Steward community. The Ray Tate Spartan Golf Classic has raised more than $150,000 in financial support for The Steward School’s athletic program. The combination of great golf and good friends coming together for a worthy cause makes this the Spartan Club’s signature fundraising event. For more information and to register for this year's golf invitational, click here.

Steward Invitational Tournaments

Each year, the Spartan Club hosts and sponsors invitational tournaments for field hockey, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, and volleyball teams. Students, families, and staff enjoy the opportunity to welcome other schools to our campus and to rally behind our teams.

The Ray Tate Student-Athlete Scholarship

In 2012, the Spartan Golf Classic was renamed in honor and memory of Ray Tate, the founding president of the Spartan Club. Mr. Tate, a man with a big heart who donated so much of his time and energy to athletics at The Steward School, established this event in 2003 and was a tremendous supporter of the school and its students, coaches, and athletic program.

To honor Mr. Tate’s love of sports and the role they play in developing well-rounded young women and men, a portion of the proceeds from the Ray Tate Spartan Golf Classic is used for two scholarships awarded in his name. The scholarships are awarded annually to recognize a currently enrolled, rising senior boy and girl who best exemplify the qualities of exemplary student-athletes.

Steward Voices

I love all that The Steward School has done for Trace. Steward has uncovered Trace’s talents, celebrated his individuality, and strengthened his belief in himself. The faculty and staff offer an amazing balance of challenge and comfort, encouraging the best from all students. I can’t imagine Trace being anywhere else. Thank you, Steward School.

Steward Voices

Steward is the right place for Micah and Kiri because they are able to develop strong connections with their teachers, which in turn facilitates confidence and resilience in their learning. Everyone at Steward knows your name and makes you feel so welcome.

Steward Voices

Steward provides Andrew with a nurturing environment which fosters his individualism, develops exemplary character traits, and continuously provides him with creative learning experiences. Consequently, Andrew ‘loves’ school and anticipates each day with joy, enthusiasm, and excitement.
- Betsy Jollay, Grandmother of Andrew O’Leary ’25

Steward Voices

Steward helped me develop the skills I needed to succeed in college and the courage and confidence to set competitive career goals for myself. But, these skills weren’t lessons I learned just in Steward’s classrooms; they came from the athletic fields, in the hallways, and during Honor Council meetings, too.
- Grace Henderson ’10

Steward Voices

Steward is an atmosphere that fosters confidence—something we have seen in all three of our kids. Whether it is playing a new sport, running for a seat on the Honor Council, or singing a solo on Talent Night, they have been encouraged to try, to experience, and to grow.
- Dan and Kathi Campbell, Parents of Abbie ’19, Emma ’17, and Ben ’14
