Statistics Carnival

Following the Bryan Lab model of project or problem-based learning, students devised various carnival games to demonstrate how statistics and probability are used in a real-world game context for children.

Steward math teachers Barbara Filler (statistics) and Corbin Orgain (Grade 6 advanced math) worked together this week on a “Statistics Carnival” hosted by Mrs. Filler’s seniors in the Bryan Innovation Lab. Both grades were studying probability, but at different levels of complexity and math content.

Following the Bryan Lab model of project or problem-based learning, Mrs. Filler’s students devised various carnival games to demonstrate how statistics and probability are used in a real-world game context for children, or as Mrs. Filler put it, “Math in action!” She also attended the Bryan Lab “Boot Camp” faculty training session in the summer of 2012.

Mrs. Orgain’s students served as the participant “guinea pigs” to play the various games and put the games through a series of trials. Games included “3 Shot Drop” (a version of a ping pong ball toss), Quarterback Corner (football toss), “M&M Twister,” “Chuck a Duck,” “The Hunger Games” (board game), a version of a dart game, and “Spartan Sorry” (board game). Mrs. Filler’s students had to devise a game scenario, calculate values and odds (determining if a game is fair or not fair to the participant), write instructions, organize their materials, and build their games. Further, in terms of encouraging students to be more self-directed learners, students wrote reflection papers on their experiences conceiving, designing, and implementing their games.
