Senior Owen Carter Places 13th in IZOD AJGA Championship

Steward senior sets sights on playing at collegiate level.

Senior Owen Carter has big golf aspirations, and he may be one step closer to his dream after placing thirteenth out of 71 at the IZOD American Junior Golf Association championship this past August.

The championship took place at renowned course The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C. It included junior golfers from all over the nation, several of whom are ranked in the top 100. Owen finished with a score of 74, 69, 69 and was the only junior from Virginia to finish in the top 70. To enter the championship, Owen had to participate in an 18-hole qualifier tournament, in which he scored 70 and tied with three other golfers for first place out of 80 participants.

“Nothing is more frustrating than working hard and not seeing the results, and nothing is more rewarding than working hard and seeing the results,” he says. “I felt like this championship was validation for all of the work I put in, along with help from my coaches and my parents.”

The AJGA championship was the pinnacle of nearly 30 tournaments in which Owen has competed since 2011, including the VSGA Amateur Championship in June. Owen hopes to play NCAA Division I golf in college, but for now, he’s taking things one step at a time.

“My goal is just finding the next step,” he says. “Just like on the golf course, you focus on your next shot. Now I’m just focusing on my next shot in life, which is playing in college.”

Owen has been golfing since he was in second grade, and he’s been a member of the varsity golf team at The Steward School with Coach Catesby Jones since eighth grade.

“I get a great deal of satisfaction when I see young men like Owen having success because I know how hard he works,” Mr. Jones says. “I’m fully convinced that he’s just got to find the right opportunity, and it’s going to be there. He’s an outstanding young man and a fine gentleman.”

Steward Voices

Steward helped me develop the skills I needed to succeed in college and the courage and confidence to set competitive career goals for myself. But, these skills weren’t lessons I learned just in Steward’s classrooms; they came from the athletic fields, in the hallways, and during Honor Council meetings, too.
