Steward Tennis Wins State Title

The Spartans earned their first-ever VISAA Division II state championship title in boys tennis!

tennis state champ trophyThe Spartans earned their first-ever VISAA Division II state championship title in boys tennis on Saturday, May 19, defeating Covenant 5-3. In singles, junior Brenden Lawrence won 11-10 at No. 2 singles, which was a turning point in the tournament. Steward was 4-2 going into doubles, and the team clinched the victory with eighth-grader Paul Hewitt’s and senior Jack Caldwell’s 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

In addition to Paul, Jack, and Brenden, the boys tennis team includes senior James Huang, sophomores Will Eiben, Elliot French, Trevor Maiese, Sachin Sanjay, Michael Zuccaro, and freshmen Alex Eiben and Matthew McCullough. The Spartans are coached by Kurt Hammerschmidt and Ed Shulman.

Steward beat Highland on May 15 with a score of 5-0 in the first round of the tournament and beat North Cross on May 18 with a score of 5-1 in the semi-finals. The team had a regular season record of 13-1.

In other sports news, the varsity baseball and golf teams qualified for the Division II state tournament finals. The baseball team is the state runner-up, losing 3-0 to reigning state champions the Miller School in the final game on Monday, May 21. Earlier in the tournament, Steward beat Nansemond Suffolk (2-1) in the first round and Highland (2-0) in the semi-finals. Four Steward baseball players were named to the VISAA All-State Teams: senior Shawn Brown (1st team), juniors William Glazebrook (1st team) and Logan Ransom (1st team), and sophomore Harrison Clifton (2nd team).

The golf team also played on Monday, May 21, and placed fourth in the state tournament. Junior Tyler Watkins was named to the Division II 1st All-State Team.

Steward's girls lacrosse team also made it to the state tournament, but unfortunately lost in the first round. However, three athletes were named to the VISAA Division II Girls Lacrosse All-State Teams: seniors Emmie Curry (1st team) and Caroline Laibstain (1st team), and freshman Saara Qureshi (2nd team).

Steward’s Track Club participates in spring meets, and senior Zac Abushmaies competed at the Track and Field state meet on Saturday, May 19. He earned a seventh-place finish (out of 25 runners) in the 800 meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 10 seconds. He also finished in ninth place (out of 22 runners) in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 49 seconds. Zac set personal best records in both events.

VISAA Division II All-State Teams for boys lacrosse, tennis, and girls soccer have yet to be announced.
