New Varsity Girls Lacrosse Coach Comes from Family Legacy

Steward will be the fifth professional coaching position for Baltimore native Emily Finn.

Emily Finn has been selected as the new varsity girls lacrosse coach. Coach Finn is an experienced lacrosse player and coach who competed at the club level during her undergraduate years at The University of Virginia (UVA).

A Baltimore native, Coach Finn played lacrosse on school and club teams from elementary school onward under the coaching guidance of her father, who now coaches at Foxcroft School in Middleburg, Va. She eventually helped him assistant coach C&A Club Lacrosse. From there, she coached middle and high school girls lacrosse at The Covenant School, Tandem Friends School, Seminole Lacrosse Summer Camp, and Albemarle Girls Field Hockey and Lacrosse League (AGLL), all in Charlottesville, Va.

Coach Finn comes from a long line of lacrosse players: her father played at UVA, her grandfather played at Duke University, and her great grandfather played at Johns Hopkins University and went on to compete in the Olympics. Her younger brother currently plays at Gettysburg College as a goalie.

“The sport has always been part of my life, and it’s a legacy I’m happy to take on,” Coach Finn said. “I’m excited to take what I learned from my father and make his teachings my own. My goal is to make sure the girls are enthusiastic and comfortable with the sport, but driven to always do better. I understand that they’re a strong team already, so I can’t wait to build on their success.”

Assistant Director of Athletics Christen Heidler said the girls lacrosse team has grown over the past four years, so the team is in a good place for Coach Finn to start.

“It’s invaluable to find good lacrosse coaches who are not only passionate about the sport, but who are passionate about teaching and developing the athleticism of young women,” she said. “Emily has club, school, and family experience and she cares deeply about lacrosse, so she is the kind of coach we want at Steward. We can’t wait to see where she takes the program.”

Coach Finn is beginning to make regular appearances on campus leading up to the start of the spring athletics season and is eager to meet parents of current and prospective girls lacrosse players.

Steward Voices

Steward helped me develop the skills I needed to succeed in college and the courage and confidence to set competitive career goals for myself. But, these skills weren’t lessons I learned just in Steward’s classrooms; they came from the athletic fields, in the hallways, and during Honor Council meetings, too.
