Varsity Golf Team Wins State Championship

Senior Captain Owen Carter has best overall score in tournament.

Update (6-10-16): Since the publication of this article, the VISAA named Class of 2016 alumnus Owen Carter the Division 2 State Player of the Year and varsity golf coach Catesby Jones the Division 2 Coach of the Year. In addition, Class of 2016 alumnus Andrew Farlow was named second team All State. Congratulations to all of you!

As rain poured down in the days preceding the VISAA Division 2 state championship tournament, Steward’s varsity golf team couldn’t be sure if the tournament would take place as planned on Monday, May 23.

Despite the uncertainty, one thing the Spartans and Coach Catesby Jones were confident about was their ability to play their best against strong competition—no matter the conditions.

As it turned out, the tournament took place (mostly) on schedule at Meadowbrook Country Club. And, Steward brought home its first-ever state championship win!

Led by captain Owen Carter, a senior, the team finished with a collective score of 321, easily ahead of second place finisher Greenbrier Christian Academy, whose score was 346. All told, the Spartans dominated the eight top-ranked Division 2 independent school teams in the state.

Owen was the medalist for the tournament, meaning his final score of 69 was the best of all competing players. He has been All State for the past five years, and this was his best state tournament score.

“There are two reasons this team is [the] state champion today,” said Coach Jones. “The first is that they are a true team. They have supported, mentored, and cheered for each other all season long, and for some players, for the past several years. The second reason is their grace under pressure. These young men are not only natural athletes, but they are focused. All of their hard work has led them to this win, and they were able to perform at their highest level in a tough tournament.”

Six Spartans represented the team during the tournament: freshman Dylan Fox, who received All State honors with his score of 81; seniors Harrison Vicars, Weston Popp, Andrew Farlow, and Owen; and freshman Charlie Hade.

This is the eighth year that Steward has competed in the state tournament, out of nine total years it has been in existence.

Steward helped me develop the skills I needed to succeed in college and the courage and confidence to set competitive career goals for myself. But, these skills weren’t lessons I learned just in Steward’s classrooms; they came from the athletic fields, in the hallways, and during Honor Council meetings, too.
