Athletics can add a powerful dimension to your child’s life. At The Steward School, our student-athletes develop confidence and sharpen their teamwork and leadership abilities — vital skills that transfer to the classroom, college, and beyond.
Something to Cheer About
We are filled with blue-and-gold pride that we offer more than 40 competitive teams in cross country, tennis, field hockey, volleyball, soccer, basketball, cheerleading, swimming, diving, golf, baseball, and lacrosse. Nearly 75 percent of Middle and Upper School students participate in one or more sports at Steward.
We are equally proud that our teams, coaches, and athletes have garnered numerous All-Metro, All-State, and Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools (TCIS) All-Conference awards throughout the years. Our list of braggables includes 135 all-state athletes in the last eight years; 16 state championships; two TCIS championships; and 128 All-TCIS honors in the last eight years. And talk about school spirit: Spartan fans of all ages love cheering on Steward’s hardworking athletes from the sidelines and stands. Plus, our Spartan Club members team up to sponsor special events (including our annual Ray Tate Spartan Golf Classic) and help fund the purchase of athletic equipment.
Winning Facilities, Lifelong Benefits
Steward’s top-notch athletics facilities reflect the school’s commitment to encouraging physical activity and teamwork. We are exceptionally proud that in 2013, our baseball field was named National Field of the Year! In the Athletic Center gym and on our fields and courts, Spartan athletes train, compete, and develop time-management skills and problem-solving skills. They also have fun and form lasting friendships, and teams often volunteer their time on community-service projects.
Game-Changing Coaches
Our athletes are mentored by coaches who lead them to success at Steward and in conference and state tournaments. Coaches serve as mentors and role models, encouraging Spartans to challenge themselves, work hard, and embody good sportsmanship on the field and off. These dedicated leaders also help student-athletes navigate the collegiate recruiting process to find potential opportunities for competition at the next level. An impressive group of our alumni (56!) participated in collegiate athletics in the past eight years.
Spartans for Life
Steward’s athletic program is an important part of a well-rounded school experience — one in which students are encouraged to explore their interests and delve into new opportunities. In addition to athletics, students can join or create a club, express themselves through the arts (including theatre, music, and visual arts), and explore leadership and entrepreneurship opportunities. Spartans thrive in a diverse, nurturing community that challenges them each day to shape the world of tomorrow.
We also pride ourselves on our strong community of alumni athletes, who return to Steward to attend events and cheer on our Spartan teams. Our Athletic Hall of Fame, founded in 2015, recognizes members of the Steward community who serve as role models for the community.
