Each year, the Spartan Club hosts a golf invitational during the month of October. The event has continued to grow and attracts more than 100 golfers, including parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends within the Steward community.
Typically the event is held at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, the home of Steward’s golf team. This recently renovated golf course and its bright, contemporary clubhouse are ideal for our team and this event. In addition to playing 18 holes of golf on one of the best courses in Richmond, each golfer receives a lunch, dinner, drinks during play, a tournament shirt, a sleeve of golf balls, a goodie bag, and other prizes.
We are able to provide such an exciting package due to the generosity of our sponsors, but most importantly, 100 percent of the proceeds for the event go to benefit the student-athletics program at The Steward School.
Due to the success of this annual event and several other fundraising activities, the Spartan Club is able to help the student-athletes at The Steward School in so many ways. In the last two years alone, we have funded or helped fund:
upgraded sound system in the main gym
Sparty mascot costume
baseball windscreen
state-of-the-art practice machines for the basketball and volleyball teams
weight room equipment
supplies for coaches
several scholarship awards for our student-athletes
and many other donations!
Your support and generosity are key to enabling these kinds of donations to continue.
Event registration will open in August; sponsorships are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For any questions, including event sponsorship, please contact us.
In 2012, the event was renamed in honor and memory of Ray Tate, the founding president of the Spartan Club. Mr. Tate, a man with a big heart who donated so much of his time and energy to athletics at The Steward School, established this event in 2003 and was a tremendous supporter of The Steward School, its students, coaches, and athletic program. To honor his love of sports and the role they play in developing well-rounded young adults, a portion of the proceeds from The Ray Tate Spartan Golf Classic are used for two $1,000 scholarships awarded annually in his name. The scholarships recognize two currently enrolled Steward seniors who best exemplify the qualities of an exemplary student-athlete.
