  • A space for minds

    To roam free
The Steward School campus houses two libraries serving the unique needs of our school population. Together, Steward librarians Carlee Cutchin (Lower) and Crystal Hamlin (Middle and Upper) curate targeted reading selections and research sources to build knowledge and grow curious readers and scholars.

Lower School

Steward's Lower School library offers nearly 12,000 books available for checkout, fostering a wide appreciation for literature and supporting curriculum through collaboration with teachers. Students are encouraged to cultivate their imaginations in Charlotte’s Corner, a cozy and inviting area for young readers. Developing digital researchers have access to online encyclopedias that can be navigated on student iPads.

Students are encouraged to return, browse, and check out books any day of the week. Each day has 2-3 scheduled periods for open checkout and book returns. In addition to books in the library, the students have access to ebooks and audiobooks. The readings we do in each grade level help foster an appreciation of different types of literature and instill a love of reading. Those research skills students begin in the Lower School library will help them in completing their coursework as they transition to Middle School.

Middle and Upper School

The light-filled Middle and Upper School library is home to a print collection of more than 8,000 titles that can be checked out by students and faculty. The library space features a little bit for everyone: quiet space to work independently, various comfortable seating options, and a class instructional area. In addition, there is a makerspace that is available for all to use, equipped with the art supplies and technology for just about anything our students can imagine. Students can drop in and create or come work on a specific project with their teacher.

The librarian maintains a LibGuides website to support students as they move through grades 6-12. This website features MLA resources, online databases, research help, SORA (online reading platform), and much more. The librarian regularly collaborates with teachers to help integrate best practices for research and citation skills.

At any given time, one can find students learning, creating, reading, and taking a brain break in this warm and welcoming space. The librarian regularly invites students in to participate in challenges and events to encourage reading and literacy.

The library space features one classroom area equipped with an LCD smartboard, as well as student printers, a green screen room for video recording, and many different spaces for students to work. The library has a dedicated makerspace that includes two Makerbot 3D printers, two sewing machines, a Silhouette cutting machine, a poster printer, Lego boards, and all the art supplies imaginable! This space is available for students to drop in when needed, but is also used for collaborative lessons between the librarian and classroom teachers.
