The Steward School
Chemistry workshop offers hands-on opportunities
Henry Bearden ’23 and Jack Jordan ’23 participated in the Structure Determination Workshop at the University of Richmond on May 25 and 26. They attended lectures on organic chemistry structure and nomenclature as well as techniques used in determining chemical structures. These techniques included infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance. They also conducted an experiment in the organic chemistry lab to make a mystery compound. They were assisted by University of Richmond students and professors, as well as their favorite Steward chemistry teacher, Leslie Kovach, in performing all these tasks. After conducting various tests, Henry and Jack were able to draw the correct structure for the mystery compound.
