Spartan awarded scholarship for excellence in Spanish
A hearty Sparty shoutout to Bella Topich ’23, who recently was awarded the Hispanic Honor Society’s Joseph Adams Senior Scholarship. The award recognizes excellence in Spanish and provides a $1,000 scholarship for college.
“The most difficult parts of the application process were composing a 500-word essay and creating a five-minute video, all in Spanish,” said Bella. “Both required a lot of preparation, but the process was fun; it was exciting to have the chance to show off my Spanish skills.”
Upper School World Languages Teacher Marina Escamez-Ballesta said, “I was thrilled to learn that Bella won the well-deserved scholarship. Not only is this an award for her academic competence, but also a boost of confidence in her Spanish skills! Bella is an excellent representative of all the values that the Hispanic Honor Society seeks, and winning the scholarship is a tangible recognition that she will take to college.”
Bella, who will attend William & Mary in the fall, said receiving the scholarship “has reinvigorated my desire to continue learning and growing as a bilingual speaker. There’s still so much for me to learn, and I’m excited to see where the language will take me as I head to college.” She is considering studying international relations and exploring a pre-law track in college. Studying Spanish, she said, “gives me opportunities to connect with people. Continuing to grow as a Spanish speaker will allow me to help build a bridge across the language gap, and I believe that's a great thing that we can all play a part in.”
