Athletics at Steward

The Steward School
Teamwork, skill building, leadership
Steward’s student-athletes don’t just practice and compete … they develop confidence, learn the importance of teamwork, and grow their leadership skills. We offer 38 competitive teams in cross country, tennis, field hockey, volleyball, soccer, basketball, cheerleading, swimming, diving, golf, baseball, and lacrosse. Did you know? Nearly 75 percent of Middle and Upper School students participate in one or more sports at Steward.

Accolades
Throughout the years, Steward’s teams, coaches, and athletes have garnered numerous All-Metro, All-State, and Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools (TCIS) All-Conference awards. Recent honors include 140 all-state athletes in the last eight years, 16 state championships, two TCIS championships, and 202 All-TCIS honors in the last eight years.

College Athletics
Each spring, the Steward community celebrates the senior athletes who have committed to play for a college team. In the 2024-25 academic year, Steward had 11 athletic signees out of 69 seniors — the largest class in the school’s history!

“We are proud of our athletes’ hard work and dedication,” said Assistant Director of Athletics Kara Bacile. “The opportunity to compete collegiately reflects a years-long commitment, sacrifice, and dedication to their sport. With an equally strong commitment to academics, these Spartans have developed excellent time management skills, are well-rounded, and prepared for life in college and beyond.”

Spartans in the Pros
Several Steward alumni recently signed professional contracts. Nic Enright ’15 made his Major League debut with the Cleveland Guardians in May 2025, making him the first athlete in Steward history to make it to the major leagues with his promotion to the Guardians (MLB). He earned his first career save in August 2025 against the New York Mets.

Efton Reid ’20 spent summer 2025 competing for the Memphis Grizzlies in the National Basketball Association summer league before signing his professional contract with Kobrat in Finland. And former VISAA DII State Player of the Year Sherese Pittman ’21 graduated from Tulane in spring 2025 and signed her first professional contract with Young Angels Kosice in Slovakia.

Spirited Fans
Spartans of all ages love cheering on Steward’s hardworking athletes from the sidelines and stands. Plus, our Spartan Club parent-volunteers have a great time when they join forces to sponsor special events (including our annual Ray Tate Spartan Golf Classic).
