Lower School AfterSchool Care Program

The Steward School AfterSchool Care Program, licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services, is offered to students in junior kindergarten through fifth grade from 3-6 p.m. every day that school is in session. On early dismissal days, we are open from dismissal time (usually 11:30 a.m.) until 6 p.m. Students are supervised by Steward School faculty and staff. A typical daily schedule for each age group is as follows:

  • 3-3:30 p.m. Registration and Snack
  • 3:30-4 p.m. Playground
  • 4-6 p.m. Free Time

Grades 1-2

  • 3-3:30 p.m. Registration and Snack
  • 3:30-4 p.m. Playground
  • 4-4:30 p.m. Homework
  • 4:30-6 p.m. Free Time

Grades 3-5

  • 3-3:30 p.m. Registration and Snack
  • 3:30-4 p.m. Homework
  • 4-4:30 p.m. Playground
  • 4:30-6 p.m. Free Time

All Lower School students are automatically enrolled in the program when their enrollment contracts are received for the school year. Other than AfterSchool Care, supervision for children after 3 p.m. is not available, and emergencies and delays can occur. Students not picked up by 3:20 p.m. will be sent to AfterSchool Care.

A registration form must be signed on the first day your child attends AfterSchool Care.

A copy of your child’s birth certificate (or passport) must be submitted by all new students to complete the AfterSchool Care registration. The Department of Social Services, our licensing agency, prohibits the admission of students who are not properly registered into our program.

Parents will be billed monthly by the Business Office and the cost will be as follows:

  • $8 per hour for students who attend daily (four or five days per week)
  • $10 per hour for drop-in students

AfterSchool Care charges begin at 3 p.m. Please note that there is an additional $30 late fee for each fifteen minutes (or any part thereof) past the 6 p.m. pick-up time.

Information regarding our licensing by the Virginia Department of Social Services is available upon request from Chuck Robinson, Coordinator of Auxiliary Programs. Please contact him with any questions you may have at or (804) 740-3394 ext. 6529. The AfterSchool Care cell phone, (804) 512-1127, is also operational every school day from 3-6 p.m.

Middle School AfterSchool Care Program

AfterSchool Care is available to all Middle School students on an ‘as needed’ basis. Parents do not have to enroll their children in AfterSchool Care, as is the case in Lower School. However, there are a few important rules for parents and students to remember.

  • Middle School students must inform Steward of their intent to attend AfterSchool Care when they arrive at school in the morning.
  • Middle School students not picked up by 3:45 p.m. (who are not participating in athletic practices) must sign in with the AfterSchool Care teacher in the Middle School Dining Commons.
  • Parents will be billed $8 per hour for students who attend daily (four or five days per week)
  • Parents will be billed $10 per hour for drop-in students
  • Snacks will be provided in the Middle School Dining Commons from 3:45-4 p.m.
  • Students may sign out to attend athletic games*– not to observe practices.
  • Students may not sign out until their parent or pick-up person is in the LS circle.
  • Parents may call the AfterSchool Care phone number to send child out for pick-up. The number is (804) 356-2388.
  • Students should be picked up by 6 p.m. After 6 p.m. there is an additional charge of $30 per 15 minutes.

To contact AfterSchool Care, parents may call (804) 356-2388. If you have questions, please contact Chuck Robinson at

Enrichment Program

Throughout the school year, we offer three sessions of after-school enrichment classes to Steward students. In the past, our program has featured classes in cooking, watercolor painting, pottery, science, comedy, sports, and more. We offer favorite classes time and again while adding new and exciting ones to our enrichment curriculum based on availability and student interest. Flyers describing the classes are distributed throughout the school year. Classes are held for six-week sessions and typically cost about $120 per student, per class. Enrollment is limited, so we ask parents to enroll early!

Half Day Adventures offer Lower and Middle School students an option besides AfterSchool Care on those days when school is dismissed early. Half Day Adventures have included Golf Instruction at Bogey’s Sports Park, a fishing outing with Virginia Outdoors, and a baking class in the Bryan Lab.
