2017 Season Recap

Coached by Mitchel Henion and Chris Lundberg, the JV baseball team has an impressive season, finished with a 9-2 record. A notable win against the Miller School was a shut out pitched by Matt Gaither and Grayson Rose, with Matt drawing the walk to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Our away win against St. Christoper’s was a no-hitter thrown by Grayson. Captains Grayson, Matt, and Harrison Johnson helped lead a great pitching staff and batting line-up. Louis Raffenot got a pitch hit opportunity after not starting the first couple games, and he started almost every game after that as he continued his hot bat the rest of the year. Michael Shamus, the youngest player on the team, started almost every game at third base and batted in the third spot in the line-up.

2016 Season Recap

For ten years, the varsity baseball program has made it to the semi-finals or finals, which no other Division II team in the state of Virginia can say. Led by coaches Bruce Secrest and Daniel Hicks, the team's final record was 13-12, accomplished with the help of the team’s young pitchers: two freshmen and one eighth-grader. Of the team's 12 losses, six were lost by one run in the last inning. Three players will go on to play in college: Kam Smith at University of Northern Illinois, BK Stancil at Averett University, and Theron Powell at Walters State Community College.

Middle School

Led by coaches Brock Shiflett and Jeff Fratter, the Middle School baseball team had its most successful season in many years. The team was undefeated with a 5-0-1 record. Nineteen players in grades 6-8 were led by Matt Gaither, Harrison Johnson, James Cox, and Matthew Kuimjian. The season culminated in a well-played 10-2 win against Central Virginia Home School, in which the outstanding battery of Matt and Harrison was key. with the help of Harrison as catcher, Matt struck out ten batters in six innings. Preston Willis pitched the final inning, striking out two to secure the win.

Steward Voices

Steward helped me develop the skills I needed to succeed in college and the courage and confidence to set competitive career goals for myself. But, these skills weren’t lessons I learned just in Steward’s classrooms; they came from the athletic fields, in the hallways, and during Honor Council meetings, too.
- Grace Henderson ’10

Steward Voices

Steward is an atmosphere that fosters confidence—something we have seen in all three of our kids. Whether it is playing a new sport, running for a seat on the Honor Council, or singing a solo on Talent Night, they have been encouraged to try, to experience, and to grow.
