2016 Season Recap

Varsity

The boys varsity soccer team had a great regular season with a strong team of 26 players. The team compiled a 10-7-1 regular season record, playing the toughest schedule in VISAA Division II. The boys qualified for their fifth straight state tournament and clinched a seventh seed ranking going into the state tournament. This season the team captured the Steward Invitational Title, and for the third straight year they won their Homecoming match. The season started with a huge tie on the road with TCIS champion Norfolk Academy. The team had big wins against Christchurch, Hampton Roads Academy, Norfolk Collegiate, Benedictine, and Bishop Sullivan. After losing nine starters, the team worked and developed good team chemistry and competed at a high level. Junior captain Jack Caldwell led the team with goals and assists, and junior Jonathan Stringfellow had a great season with many good goal scoring efforts—when called on to play defense and man mark the opposing team’s best players, he shut them out. Sophomore Cole Hollier had a goal-scoring streak of four straight games, including two huge goals in a 2-1 win versus Benedictine, and was one of the best sophomores in the state. Junior Ned Cole had a stellar season as a first-year starting goal keeper, keeping the team in a variety of games by making game clinching saves. The team was coached by EJ Watkins and assistant coached by Casey Smith and Patrick Tucker.

JV

The JV boys soccer team had a great season highlighted by wins over Millwood School and Christchurch. The young team, which was composed of mostly freshmen and five sophomores, was led by sophomore captains Ned Hayes and Charlie Hade. The boys played an extremely tough and competitive schedule which included playing against four varsity teams throughout the season. They fought hard in every single match and battled every second of the way. The culmination of the season came in their last two games: first up was a 4-0 win over Millwood's varsity team, where the boys controlled the game from the opening whistle to the last whistle. Goals were scored by Charlie, freshman Liam Boardman, and sophomore Evan Escobar. The final game of the season came against Christchurch, who the team played just a few weeks prior and lost a hard fought match 1-0. This match would not end the same. All of the team’s hard work and dedication showed in this match as Steward was able to shutout Christchurch 2-0, with goals scored by Evan and freshman Callen Smith. All of this would not have happened without the work of freshman Griffin Robeson in goal and a stellar defensive effort from the rest of team. The team was coached by Patrick Tucker.

Middle School

The Middle School boys blue soccer team, led by coaches Jim Brennan and Jeff Fratter, had a strong season winning four games while notching two shutouts. Noteworthy accomplishments included keys wins over St. Michael's School and Fredericksburg Academy. Chemistry and teamwork existed against all opponents and was apparent in the boy's last career middle school game against Richmond Christian, a 4-3 victory. The team was led by eighth grader David Cheon, who had 10 goals.

The seventh-grade Middle School boys gold soccer team ended their terrific season with a winning record. The boys started off the season opener by beating Collegiate with a score of 9-0. They continued their momentum with other key wins, including Fredericksburg Academy, and a thrilling come-from-behind win over the Richmond Home School team. The team chemistry proved vital and the boys made major improvements in their skills development and knowledge of the game. The offensive threat was undeniable, winning multiple games by several goals. Overall, the boys had a fantastic season and will continue to be a force to reckon with in the future. The team was coached by Jordan Clark and assistant coached by Cierra Gillard.

Steward helped me develop the skills I needed to succeed in college and the courage and confidence to set competitive career goals for myself. But, these skills weren’t lessons I learned just in Steward’s classrooms; they came from the athletic fields, in the hallways, and during Honor Council meetings, too.
