College Counseling

Working together to choose the right path.

The Steward School approaches college counseling like running a marathon—a lot of planning, training, and research are incorporated before the “main event” even begins. Navigating this process requires perseverance and guidance, not just for seniors, but throughout Upper School.

Students in grades 9-12 are encouraged to attend meetings with college representatives who visit the Steward campus and, as early as freshman year, students begin touring colleges as a class for field trips. The overnight college tour at the beginning of junior year is often the most important component of the application process because the students are exposed to a variety of school types—public/private, small/large, urban/rural—in a short amount of time. Students use these examples to consider what type of school really fits them, which helps to guide the counselor’s recommendations throughout the rest of the process.
