Library and Technology

1:1 Technology for every student JK through 12.

Technology resources are a major component of any forward-thinking school, and The Steward School is no exception. With the launch of 1:1 program for all students in the fall of 2014, every Steward student has access to a device during the school year: in grades JK-8, iPads loaded with apps are available to every student, and Upper School students are responsible for bringing their own devices every day. The heart of our mission is to prepare our students for college and for life, so supporting technology in the classroom will help set the foundation for using devices wisely.

We are especially pleased to offer a 1:1 program because it provides equal access to technology for all students, and the results of their digital collaborations with other students and teachers are astounding. Not only are we able to minimize our carbon footprint, but in the process, we are increasing the personalization of learning, helping develop research skills, and providing a variety of choices for student assessment.

In addition to the 1:1 program, the school’s technology highlights include:

  • Interactive whiteboards
  • AV-equipped classrooms and conference rooms
  • Campus-wide student and guest wireless
  • Labs including four laptop labs and seven iPad carts
  • State-of-the-art digital graphics lab with Macs and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Online access to World Book, iXL, Brain Pop, and more

Library Resources

The best resources in any library is the librarian! Steward Librarians Betty Enright (Lower) and Crystal Hamlin (Middle and Upper) curate targeted reading selections and research sources to build knowledge and grow curious readers and scholars.

Steward’s Lower School Library fosters a wide appreciation for literature and supports curriculum through collaboration with teachers. Students are encouraged to cultivate their imaginations in Charlotte’s Corner, a cozy and inviting area for young readers. Developing digital researchers have access to online encyclopedias that can be navigated on student iPads or on a library laptop.

The Middle and Upper School Library curates an engaging and academic collection with unabated access to digital and print resources to support intellectual discovery, information literacy, and lifelong learning for sixth- through twelfth-grade students and faculty.

Lower School Library Policies and Programs

  • The Lower School Library has a book for everyone! With more than 12,000 books and periodicals, each and every Steward student can find a favorite sources to satisfy their curious minds. The library’s Read and Learn program works to build exposure and appreciation for a variety of literature and information sources, customized to each grade level.
  • Students are encouraged to return, browse, and check out books during their weekly class library visits.

Middle and Upper School Library Policies and Programs

  • The beautiful, light-filled Middle and Upper School Library provides instruction space, tutoring rooms, and collaboration labs. Quiet collaboration is encouraged in this space so that students can come together to complete projects in an academic commons setting.
  • The Middle and Upper School Library utilizes 21st-century research platforms to support our young digital scholars. These online databases and electronic resources are introduced to our students in Middle School, and research skills are fine-tuned in the library during Freshman Seminar: Research Writing class.
  • A new Maker Space provides students with a 3D printer, two sewing machines, and an array of craft supplies. Teachers frequently bring their classes to the Maker Space for projects, and the librarian regularly hosts Maker and Tinker sessions.
  • The library hosts a healthy vending machine, and visitors may enjoy small snacks and drinks.
  • Students must adhere to The Steward School Technology Acceptable Use Policy while in the library.
