New Academic Opportunities: Summer Quarter

The Steward School
For-credit courses for Spartans in grades 10-12
The Steward School is pleased to announce the introduction of course offerings for summer 2026. Summer Quarter is a new academic opportunity for rising Steward sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

“These for-credit honors-level courses are designed for students who wish to enhance their academic resume and enrich themselves with additional courses outside the standard course catalog,” said Elizabeth Crenshaw, Upper School academic dean. Students will earn an honors-level credit, which will be added to their official Steward transcript.

The addition of these new courses aligns with Steward’s Strategic Plan, Compass 2028, and its commitment to “pilot an experiential and project-based learning program.” Dr. Yaa Agyekum, assistant director of Lower School and director of the Center for the Advancement of Learning, is a member of the Strategic Plan ad hoc committee Beyond AP. Members of the committee, which includes faculty from all divisions, collaborate to explore new ways for students to develop, demonstrate, and be assessed on their learning at Steward. The Summer Quarter is one of the results of that collaboration.

Two Course Offerings
Two honors-level courses will be offered this summer. The Study of Sports in Society: A Critical Examination, led by Ms. Crenshaw, guides students beyond the scoreboard to analyze athletics to dissect the intersection of economics, politics, and social and cultural identity in sports both domestically and globally. Peter Hurley will lead Professional and Personal Writing in the 21st Century, where students master the art of modern influence and communication. From academic rhetoric to social media and the ethical use of AI tools, students will sharpen their independent voice and craft impactful, original texts.

Registration
The Summer Quarter will run from June 22-July 17 and will operate on a hybrid model, with both in-person classes and remote classes. Tuition for each course is $795, and registration is open through the Summer Experience portal. Each class is limited to 10 registrants, and students may only sign up for one of the courses. Information about course policies, including attendance, can be found here. For questions about registration or billing, please contact Chuck Robinson, director of auxiliary services.
