Standout Spartan: Jacob Campbell '29

The Steward School
Eagle Scout candidate dedicated to helping others
Congratulations to Jacob Campbell ’29, who recently completed a months-long project as an Eagle Scout candidate. Jacob built two picnic tables and two cornhole boards for REAL LIFE, a Richmond nonprofit that provides support for those in recovery. Jacob’s project involved many hours of planning and preparation.

“I budgeted for materials, did fundraising to cover all the expenses (including food for volunteers who helped me with the project), and went through several rounds of approval processes on editing my proposal,” said Jacob. “REAL LIFE provides housing for people recovering from substance abuse to help them get back on their feet and offers life-skills classes and job services. The picnic tables and cornhole boards I built offer REAL LIFE residents opportunities to help them socialize, build friendships, and be physically active.”

In all, Jacob spent 51 hours planning and building. He’ll complete the project with a written report about what went well and what could be improved. In addition, he will secure four letters of recommendation and write an essay about his commitment to the Scout Oath and Scout Law. He looks forward to being named an Eagle Scout this summer!

Jacob, who joined the Boy Scouts in the fourth grade, has aspired to be an Eagle Scout since then.

“I have always loved the outdoors: hiking, rafting, skiing, and mountaineering,” he shared. “As I got older, I realized all the skills I could learn on the way to Eagle Scout status, such as gaining leadership positions and earning merit badges. I have earned 26 merit badges in categories such as first aid, cooking, and riflery. I’ve also learned leadership skills like communication, planning, organizing, and managing others to stay productive.” Jacob said he is gratified by helping others “because donating time to make a difference is more valuable than anything else you can give.”

At Steward, Jacob is a member of the Leadership Program, Political Discussion Club, Pickleball Club, and Squash Club (the latter of which he founded). He also plays varsity tennis for the Spartans.
