Standout Spartan: John McAlister

Middle/Upper School Instrumental Music Teacher John McAlister has special plans on January 1, 2026: He’ll be marching in the 137th Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, as a member of the Band Directors Marching Band! 

The Saluting America’s Band Directors project has assembled band directors from across North America to march on January 1 under the theme, “America’s band directors: We teach music. We teach life.” The theme recognizes the extraordinary dedication and accomplishments of band directors and music educators everywhere. 

“Throughout their careers, the music educators in this band have collectively mentored and taught hundreds of thousands of students,” noted Mr. McAlister, who in 2023 marched in the 97th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. “These professionals not only teach and conduct music; they teach about life itself.” Mr. McAlister was selected to join the group of more than 300 band directors from across North America and six across Virginia. The musicians will accompany a colorful, animated float along the parade route. Stay tuned for where to stream the Rose Parade.
