Classroom Happenings: Cute, Collaborative … and Creepy!

The Steward School
Spartans team up for friendship and art
This semester, second graders read “Creepy Carrots,” the story of a rabbit who fears that his favorite treats are out to get him. The book is silly, a little spooky, and very kid-friendly. The second graders recently gathered with seventh graders taught by English Teacher Mary Hopkins for an art project inspired by the book. Steward teachers frequently combine a hands-on project with a book to help stories come alive for students.

Middle/Upper School Librarian Crystal Hamlin welcomed students to the library with a short video of the “Creepy Carrots” story.

“Now you get to make your very own creepy carrot!” she exclaimed, and the teams got to work cutting out carrot shapes and decorating them in creative ways. Second-grade teachers Lyn Lunsford, Kimberlee Magrill, and Kris Marchant were delighted that their students spent time with seventh-grade Spartans.

“This was a great opportunity for younger students to work together with the ‘big kids,’” said Ms. Marchant. “It was a light-hearted project, yes, but much more than that. The students talked, asked each other questions, and got to know one another. Our second graders look up to the older students, who serve as informal mentors, and this project was one way for the seventh graders to exercise their communication and empathy skills. Plus, it was a lot of fun!”
