A recent beyond-the-classroom lesson for fourth graders highlighted two of Steward’s core values: innovation and inspiration.
As an introduction to learning about multiplying fractions, fourth graders taught by Paige Pumphrey had a very sweet assignment recently. They teamed up to double a Rice Krispies treats recipe! In the Bryan Innovation Lab, they completed all the steps to make a delicious tray of goodies.
“Our Spartans learned how to double a recipe by using their skills to multiply fractions,” said Ms. Pumphrey. Each student played an important role in the lesson. Some wore stovetop chefs, while others helped measure ingredients or oversee the process.
After completing the recipe, Ms. Pumphrey’s students headed outside to work with Megan Young, Bryan Innovation Lab program specialist, in the Bryan Lab gardens. There, they explored the colorful plants and flowers to find and record fractions.
“For example, they learned that three-fifths of the strawberries have turned red,” said Ms. Young. “This was a fun way to blend the beauty of nature and math.”
Back inside the Bryan Lab, the students eagerly sampled their delicious Rice Krispies treat. “Many students agreed that this was the most fun they’ve had in math class,” said Ms. Pumphrey. “And they all thoroughly enjoyed sampling the results of their hard work!”
