Fall 2016 Season Recap

The first fall season of girls tennis was a great success. The team qualified for the state championship and was seeded eighth in the tournament. With several eighth graders and freshmen in the top six, the team posted a winning 7-6 season with two of those losses coming at the hands of the no. one and no. two teams in the state. The girls played six singles and three doubles matches. Five of the top six girls had winning singles records: freshman Sonali Sanjay posted a 9-3 record. Another outstanding accomplishment was earned by freshman Julia Monroe who was voted onto the all-state second team. Everyone one will be returning for another year with the exception of our lone senior, Mary McLaughlin, who had a 7-5 record playing at no. 3 singles. The team will continue to develop over the next several months and hopes to have more players join next year for another run at the state title. The team was coached by Kurt Hammerschmidt and assistant coached by Ed Shulman.

Spring 2016 Season Recap

The varsity girls tennis team had a successful year with a winning record of 4-3. Under coaches Kurt Hammershmidt, Ed Shulman, and and Allyson Brand, four of the top six girls had winning records in singles and doubles: Julia Monroe, Anastasia Postolati, Scotti Harrison, and Mary McLaughlin. All of the girls recorded victories and improved their singles and doubles play as the year progressed.

Coach Hammerschmidt welcomed Ed Shulman to the varsity boys coaching staff, and they weathered through a challenging schedule toward a 3-8 season. The players showed tremendous improvement in their strokes, consistency, and match strategies. The top three positions were held by Brenden Lawrence, Elliot French, and Jack Caldwell, who led the team in matches played and victories in singles and doubles. The team worked hard during practice on skills and ability in order to compete with older players from other schools.

Steward Voices

Steward helped me develop the skills I needed to succeed in college and the courage and confidence to set competitive career goals for myself. But, these skills weren’t lessons I learned just in Steward’s classrooms; they came from the athletic fields, in the hallways, and during Honor Council meetings, too.
- Grace Henderson ’10

Steward Voices

Steward is an atmosphere that fosters confidence—something we have seen in all three of our kids. Whether it is playing a new sport, running for a seat on the Honor Council, or singing a solo on Talent Night, they have been encouraged to try, to experience, and to grow.
