Summer Experience FAQs

Check here for frequently asked questions about Steward's Summer Experience

What makes Steward’s camps different than other summer programs in the area?
The Summer Experience offers many choices for families who want half-day or full-day camp options in a convenient location. In addition to top-notch academic camps, we are proud to offer unusual art camps, at which campers create high-quality pieces; sports camps that allow for individual attention with beginners, yet challenge experienced athletes; innovation camps in the Bryan Innovation Lab, which is a unique facility in itself; and the most fun afternoon camp in all of Richmond, when campers take daily field trips to local hot spots. Click here to see the full brochure of all the 2017 camps.

My child does not attend Steward during the regular school year. Can he or she register for the Summer Experience?
Yes! We love to welcome visitors to our summer programs. Only two camps are limited to Steward students (Kindergarten Discovery Camp and Spartan Counselor Apprentices).

When will the Summer Experience brochure be available?
The PDF is available at the end of January each year, and registration opens on February 1, 2017.

How can I receive a Summer Experience brochure in the mail?
Please contact the Coordinator of Auxiliary Programs Mary Hopkins at Mary.Hopkins@stewardschool.org or (804) 740-3394, ext. 6529 with your address to receive a Summer Experience brochure via the U.S. mail.

Can I register for camp online?
All Summer Experience registration takes place online. The brochure no longer contains a paper registration form. Click here to register.

Can I pay for summer camps with a credit card or by using a student account?
All online summer camp registrations before June 1, 2017 require a non-refundable $50 deposit per camp with a credit card. Balances may be paid by credit card. After June 1, the balance must be paid in full during the online registration process. Unfortunately, we are not able to process camp registrations through the student account program.

Do I have to pay my balance all at once?
During the registration process, you may choose to pay all at once or to make installment payments until May 2. For the second option, the balance may be broken down into monthly payments minus the non-refundable $50 deposit due at registration. Installment payment dates are as follows: March 2, April 4, and May 2; all balances must be paid in full by June 1, 2017. Any camp registrations after May 1 must be paid in full.

Can we pro-rate a camp?
We can pro-rate two-week camps for one week. A single-week option will appear automatically during the registration process. Contact Coordinator of Auxiliary Programs Mary Hopkins at Mary.Hopkins@stewardschool.org for information about pro-rating any other camp.

I can’t find the Active Learning Services camps, Redskins Kids Camps, or Bob Foley Next Level Basketball camps on your registration page. How do I register for those?
The Summer Experience hosts several groups for camps every year, some of which are part of Steward’s registration process, and some of which are not. Those whose registration processes take place on their own websites are considered our partner camps, and you will need to visit their websites to register.

How will I know if a camp is full?
During registration, you will enter your child’s birthdate and rising grade level. At that point, the available camp options open for him or her will be populated as choices. Camps that are full will not appear as options for registration.

Can I call or email the Summer Experience staff to reserve a spot without submitting a registration form and payment?
Unfortunately, we cannot reserve any spaces in our camps or classes. They are available on a first come, first served basis via the online registration.

I have more than one child who wants to attend a Summer Experience camp. Do I have to submit more than one registration form?
Your family will have a login, and a form will be required for each child to obtain age, school, and medical information. Once you have entered each child’s information, it is saved with your family’s account and does not need to be reentered in future years. If you were a Summer Experience camper in 2016, your information should be available from last year.

Steward Voices

Steward is an atmosphere that fosters confidence—something we have seen in all three of our kids. Whether it is playing a new sport, running for a seat on the Honor Council, or singing a solo on Talent Night, they have been encouraged to try, to experience, and to grow.
- Dan and Kathi Campbell, Parents of Abbie ’19, Emma ’17, and Ben ’14

Steward Voices

Steward is the right place for Micah and Kiri because they are able to develop strong connections with their teachers, which in turn facilitates confidence and resilience in their learning. Everyone at Steward knows your name and makes you feel so welcome.
- Paul and Janet Yoon, Parents of Kiri ’27 and Micah ’26

Steward Voices

Steward helped me develop the skills I needed to succeed in college and the courage and confidence to set competitive career goals for myself. But, these skills weren’t lessons I learned just in Steward’s classrooms; they came from the athletic fields, in the hallways, and during Honor Council meetings, too.
- Grace Henderson ’10

Steward Voices

Steward provides Andrew with a nurturing environment which fosters his individualism, develops exemplary character traits, and continuously provides him with creative learning experiences. Consequently, Andrew ‘loves’ school and anticipates each day with joy, enthusiasm, and excitement.
- Betsy Jollay, Grandmother of Andrew O’Leary ’25

Steward Voices

I love all that The Steward School has done for Trace. Steward has uncovered Trace’s talents, celebrated his individuality, and strengthened his belief in himself. The faculty and staff offer an amazing balance of challenge and comfort, encouraging the best from all students. I can’t imagine Trace being anywhere else. Thank you, Steward School.
- Ron Coles, Father of Trace Coles ’19 and Grade 5 Teacher
